Time to Get Real:
Moving Communities from Violence to Peace
Friday, June 19, 2015
8:30 AM to 4:00 PM
Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut
The registration site for our second annual conference to bring people together to learn, share and connect is now open. To register for the conference, click on this link.
The Conference will feature dynamic presentations and informative panel discussions. The day will begin with a facilitated reflection on youth artwork that will inspire us to “get real” and demonstrate how art can be an effective means to express oneself. Attendees will then be led through an exchange of stories by globally recognized leaders from Narrative 4. The N4 story exchange fosters empathy by breaking down barriers, shattering stereotypes and building understanding.
Afternoon panels will feature knowledgeable and gifted presenters who will educate, challenge and inspire you in the following areas:
Methodologies for breaking down divisions and building bridges across community lines
Panelists: Tiana Hercules of Project Longevity, Lee Keylock of Narrative Four, Stephanie Hertz of Anti-Defamation League, and Rev. Henry Brown of Mothers United Against Violence. Moderated by Bishop Jim Curry, Episcopal Church in CT, Retired.
Using the arts therapeutically to foster peace in our communities
Panelists: Jonathon Gillman of Looking In Theatre, Dollie McLean of the Artists’ Collective, music therapist Doug Johnson and Robin Cullen of the Judy Dworin Performance Project. Moderated by Rabbi Donna Berman of Charter Oak Cultural Center.
Engaging people in advocacy relating to peace and community organizing
Panelists: Cori Mackey of the Christian Activities Council, Po Murray of the Newtown Action Alliance, Cheryl Sharp of the Commission on Human Rights & Opportunities and Andrew Woods of Hartford Communities that Care/Violence Free Zone Coalition. Moderated by Senator Beth Bye.
Strategies for mediation/conflict resolution/emotional intelligence
Panelists: Shauna Tominey of Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, Pastor John Lewis of CT Center for Nonviolence and Life Center Ministries, Carolyn Vermont of CT Against Gun Violence, and Iran Nazario of COMPASS Peacebuilders. Moderated by Deborah Lewis of Moms Demand Action.
You will leave the day with a list of things you can do to make a difference.
