Time to Get Real: Moving Communities From Violence to Peace Friday, June 19, 2015 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut Last year a dynamic and diverse group of community leaders came together and began the discussion, it’s time to continue the conversation and give you ways to get involved and take action. Our 2nd annual conference will bring together people to learn, share and connect. The day will begin with a facilitated reflection on youth artwork that illustrates the effects of violence. Then participants will work with story telling to better understand what it means to “walk in someone else’s shoes”. In afternoon sessions knowledgeable and gifted presenters will educate, challenge and inspire you in the following areas: 1) Methodologies for breaking down divisions and building bridges across community lines 2) Using the arts therapeutically to foster peace in our communities 3) Engaging people in advocacy relating to peace and community organizing 4) Strategies for mediation/conflict resolution/emotional intelligence You will leave the day with a list of things you can do to make a difference. All are invited to attend worship at AHCC (814 Asylum Ave., Hartford) on Sunday, March 22nd at 9:00 or 10:15 AM when Nelba Marquez-Greene and Jimmy Greene will share their testimony. Their six year old daughter Ana Grace was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School two years ago. Nelba is a licensed marriage and family therapist and Jimmy is a professional jazz musician. A children’s choir from AHCC will sing a song from Jimmy’s new album entitled “Beautiful Life.” Wearing purple (Ana's favorite color) will show our support of Jimmy and Nelba and will also serve as a visible reminder to all of us of their message that Love Wins.
n commemoration of the second anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, as well as the 60,000 American victims of gun violence since December 2012, the Newtown Foundation is being joined by Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, States United to Prevent Gun Violence, and the Washington National Cathedral in a nationwide vigil service of mourning and remembrance for all those who have fallen victim to the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in America. Join the School of Social Work community to hear from a panel of presenters who will discuss their work on non-violence education and structural inequality. There will be an opportunity for the larger community to come together to hear from the panelists and discuss strategies that we can take as a community to make change. This discussion is a step in a larger, long-term change process to address these complex issues. Date: Wed.
